A Happier Thanksgiving for 9/11 Heroes:

9/11 Injured Responders Will Keep Federal Aid

Rep. Maloney applauds Rep. Fossella, united NY delegation

for securing commitment from Speaker of the House to reinstate money

WASHINGTON, DC - The House Speaker, Dennis Hastert (R-IL), has agreed to preserve 9/11 injured responder aid that was on the verge of being taken away (http://www.house.gov/maloney/issues/Sept11/112205letter_hastert.pdf). Rep. Vito Fossella (R-NY) was able to secure an agreement from the Speaker following months of pressure from the united New York delegation to scuttle a Bush administration plan that would take back $125 million appropriated for injured responders after 9/11.

The money was originally scheduled to be taken back by the Bush administration as part of the Labor-HHS Appropriations bill, which Congress has yet to approve. Speaker Hastert says that the $125 million will instead be returned in the next Katrina relief bill as emergency spending, which is not subject to normal budgetary rules.

Rep. Carolyn Maloney (D-NY), who worked with Rep. Fossella, New York Senators Hillary Clinton and Charles Schumer and the rest of the New York congressional delegation, said that she is thrilled for the injured responders and proud of the New York delegation.

"It may be a happy Thanksgiving for our 9/11 heroes after all," said Maloney. "We have it in writing - the rug won't be pulled out from under our injured responders.

"I am proud to have worked with Congressman Fossella, Senators Clinton and Schumer, Congressman Walsh and the rest of the New York delegation. I applaud Congressman Fossella for securing this agreement, and I also thank the Mayor for never giving up and for working in unison for this cause.

"Most of all, I thank the brave heroes who were there for us on 9/11 and came to Washington time and again to fight for what is fair. Without them, this federal aid would be gone. On Thanksgiving, I will certainly give thanks for them and all that they do."
