Rosaleen Tallon & 9/11 Families
Searching for Safety At Ground Zero

WHAT: Rosaleen Tallon & 9/11 Family Groups press conference regarding compromises to public safety at GZ. This will be led by Rosaleen Tallon, who has been holding a Memorial vigil by sleeping on the sidewalk outside of Fire House 10-10 across from the WTC . Public Safety experts will highlight violations of safety codes in WTC Memorial & future development plans.

WHEN: Thursday, March 16, 2006

TIME: 12:00 Noon

WHERE: Liberty & Church Streets

The Port Authority & LMDC have shown bad faith on the safety issues of Ground Zero. The public and 9/11 Families have been told that the memorial & all WTC development will meet NYC building and fire codes. Yet, the LMDC and the Port Authority continue to resist showing the public the detailed safety plans. Just like the plans for the WTC & the memorial itself, the alleged code compliance is hidden, out of sight and out of mind. Limited architectural renderings of the memorial have shown that there are only two non-compliant open ramps from the underground memorial building. Where are the enclosed fire-rated stairwells and ramps? How will the visitors get out of the below-grade caverns in an emergency? How will emergency responders get down to rescue those trapped below? Confining large numbers of people in a subterranean labyrinth is a recipe for disaster, especially one that is a high profile terrorist target. For safety's sake, we must have WTC redevelopment that is under the legal jurisdiction of NYC Building and Fire Codes. The PA must relinquish its immunities and exemptions from Codes for the Memorial and for the entire WTC.
