Maloney, Fossella Ask Health Czar for Progress Report

on Response to 9/11 Health Crisis

Reps. Ask When Gov't Will Release Plan to Monitor and Treat

Everyone Exposed to Ground Zero Toxins

Washington, D.C. - Today, U.S. Representatives Carolyn B. Maloney (D-Manhattan, Queens) and Vito Fossella (R-Staten Island, Brooklyn) asked federal 9/11 Health Coordinator Dr. John Howard to give Congress an update on the federal government's progress in responding to widespread health problems caused by the collapse of the World Trade Center towers. Maloney and Fossella expressed confidence in Howard's commitment to his new assignment but noted that much more work remains to be done to medically monitor and treat everyone exposed to the toxins of Ground Zero.

"We're asking Dr. Howard to give us an update on his progress in developing a plan to deal with the 9/11 health crisis," said Congresswoman Maloney. "The federal government needs to take serious action to relieve the suffering of thousands of 9/11 heroes. I know that Dr. Howard is a man of great compassion and commitment, and I look forward to reviewing his plan in the very near future."

"Dr. Howard has moved quickly to enhance the federal government's response to the health impacts of 9/11," said Congressman Fossella. "He understands the need for quick action, but also recognizes that we must have a comprehensive, long-term plan in place to help the first responders, workers and residents who may have been impacted by the attacks. We will continue working with Dr. Howard in the months ahead to ensure that those who are sick get access to the resources they need."

The Representatives requested that Dr. Howard explain when the Centers for Disease Control plans to disburse funding appropriated by Congress in December to treat sick and injured 9/11 responders; when Howard expects to release medical guidelines for treating individuals who report illnesses that may be related to 9/11; and what budget recommendations Dr. Howard will put forward to fund existing health programs and to care for those who currently lack monitoring and treatment.

In addition to these requests, Maloney and Fossella also asked if the federal government is studying reports that a large number of 9/11 responders have developed cancer and to explain whether the New York City Law Department's reported review of 9/11 medical protocols may have created a conflict of interest.

A full copy of the Representatives' written request to Dr. Howard can be found at http://maloney.house.gov/documents/911recovery/20060711DrHoward.pdf .

The health and well-being of all those who were exposed to the air and all the toxins at WTC is of the utmost importance. Mt. Sinai World Trade Center Monitoring program has been just that since 2002. I am sure that if they looked in to the records and the results of over the 10,000 participants in the program they will see for themselves the toll that the site has taken on them emotionally and physically. ENOUGH!!! These men and women need to be looked after. Because when it happens again are we going to ask these first responders to risk their lives again? I hope this helps you in your cause.
