Rep. Maloney Statement on New York Citys

9/11 Health Panel Report

WASHINGTON, DC Rep. Carolyn Maloney (NY-14) today released the following statement on the World Trade Center Health Panels report:

"I congratulate the Mayor and his staff for todays release of the report on the health effects related to the terrorist attacks of 9/11. The report clearly demonstrates the enormity and severity of the situation that can only be adequately addressed by the federal government.

"Along with the New York congressional delegation, I have long advocated for the medical monitoring of everyone exposed to the toxins of Ground Zero and treatment for anyone who is sick as a direct result. The Mayors plan to extend medical monitoring and treatment to area residents, workers and schoolchildren is the right and ethical approach to this health emergency. This approach is consistent with the goals of the Remember 9/11 Health Act, which I originally introduced in 2003.

"I also appreciate the Mayors suggestion of reopening the 9/11 Victims Compensation Fund (VCF) to provide compensation to the sick and injured. We must provide compensation for lost wages and injuries in order to make the heroes of 9/11 whole. Consistent with this goal, I have introduced legislation to reopen the VCF, named after NYPD Police Detective James Zadroga, who was one of the first medically-confirmed deaths linked to service at Ground Zero.

"Going forward I look forward to working with the Mayor to deliver the federal assistance it will take to fully address this problem."
