Jacobs joins with Heroes Helping Heroes to demand continued commitment to fund needs of 9-11 first responders

Deadline approaching for LI First Responders to apply for Workers Comp

Rally on Wednesday, May 2, 2007 at 11:30 a.m

Nassau County Presiding Officer Judy Jacobs (D-Woodbury) and her fellow lawmakers will join with 9-11 rescue and recovery workers, labor leaders and health and safety advocates on Wednesday, May 2 at 11:30 a.m. to demand a continued commitment to fund long-term health monitoring and treatment for Long Islands first responders and to alert any 9-11 workers that they have until August 14, 2007 to file a claim with the New York Workers Compensation Board.

While rescue and recovery crews worked tirelessly at the WTC site, they were exposed to toxic contaminants that jeopardized their health and safety. Since that day many have become seriously ill and some have even died. The Workers Compensation Law was amended to protect a workers right to file for 9-11-related workers compensation if a person becomes sick in the future. Registering now will protect a workers right to file for 9-11-related workers compensation should a person develop a latent disease in the future.

It is estimated that nearly 31% of all first responders to the World Trade Center disaster were from Long Island. Many dont realize that the deadline for filing is fast approaching, after which they will not be eligible to file a 9-11-related workers compensation claim.

WHO:

Presiding Officer Judy Jacobs, Nassau County legislators Kevan Abrahams, Roger Corbin, Dave Mejias, Lisanne Altmann, Wayne Wink, Diane Yatauro, Jeffrey Toback, Dave Denenberg and Joe Scannell; John Sferazo, Union Iron Worker and President and C0-Founder of Heroes Helping Heroes; and other invited guests

WHAT:

Rally to call for a continued commitment to fund the needs of Long Islands 9-11 first responders.

WHEN:

Wednesday, May 2

WHERE:

Front Steps of One West Street in Mineola
