|Winter finally came with its first real batch of snow and our student volunteers answered the call.
Over 500 student volunteers enrolled in the Where to Turn Snow Shoveling for Seniors Program were at the homes of their designated seniors to shovel the sidewalk and a path to the front door.
This service is provided at no charge to the seniors and from some of the calls they are very happy.
Now for the bad news………
We have nearly 1,700 additional seniors for whom we do not have volunteers.
It breaks our hearts to have to tell them that unfortunately we do not have enough student volunteers to meet the demand.
Despite our best efforts to reach out to all of our local schools and youth organizations we just can’t seem to attract more then the 500 to 600 kids we get each year.
Not to take away from those who volunteer but it is a disgrace that from the over 20,000 eligible students (7th grade and up) we can only count on 500-600.
We will continue our outreach and once again ask that you spread the word.
Participating students receive 10 hours of community service credit and a letter of recognition from the Borough President and more importantly the gratitude of their adopted senior.
