Even though we had to postpone the “Tag You’re It” activities until next Saturday it did not stop us from going out and cleaning 4 locations (see attached before and after pictures) bring our total to 63.

One of the locations was Not Just Bagels which was cleaned up on Thursday by the clean team and immediately hit again. We stopped in for coffee and cleaned it up for them on our way to another site.

I am putting the owner in touch with Scott as we will probably put an American Flag mural at this location.

Two of our workers today were on court ordered community service for graffiti vandalism.

One from Staten Island and one from the Bronx and they worked extremely hard cleaning up these locations.

The Criminal Courts keep sending offenders through Where to Turn to satisfy their sentences and I am making sure that they serve their time on graffiti clean ups.

Unfortunately this does not apply to juvenile offenders as they go through Family Court and are not under the District Attorney.

I have been advised that we need the mayor to go to the Corporate Counsel and make community service and restitution a mandatory part of all sentencing. This way even juvenile offenders will be required to do community service and we can even try to get them to remove their own tags.

If we ask for both community service and restitution and we only get them to agree on community service we are still ahead of the game as the bulk of our offenders are juveniles.

I will draft a letter and ask our councilmen to present it to the mayor.

Good News

It looks like we will be moving the Clean Team truck to Borough Command at the 122 Precinct. Just have to have them request that the truck be reassigned. As soon as we get this done the truck will be available to do clean ups in all 3 precincts.

We hope to have the truck for next week as we have 17 sites for which we need it.

All three precincts continue to do a great job with graffiti arrests

We got a call from the North Field Bank and their foundation will be contributing $2,500 to Where to Turn to continue our community projects. We will use this towards the production of our Graffiti PSA’s

We also received an additional $200 from the 122 Precinct Community Council. (Which went towards paint and supplies this week)

Bad News

We still have had no success obtaining paint and supplies from the Mayor’s Office. Our requests continue to go unanswered and our calls are not returned.

We need some help as we are pretty much out of paint at this point.

We have still not gotten any waivers from realtors managing unoccupied locations. We are going to see if we can have the Sanitation Dept start issuing summonses to these property owners if they do not supply waivers.

Finally we are going to have a press conference to kick of next weekends “Tag You’re It” activities. It will be at the empty lot on Amboy Road off of Richmond Ave. (near Blockbuster). This is where we will be assigning locations and handing out supplies and setting up our volunteer teams, and is also the site of a major clean up.

The Commissioner of Sanitation is very interested in what we are doing so we are going to invite him as well.

We are hoping for a good response from our community leaders and elected officials to act as clean up team leaders.

Dennis

P.S. We are still looking for a large centrally located venue for our Graffiti Town Hall Meeting which we want to have before the end of the school year.
