&

Press Availability

The Subcommittee on Health will hold a hearing on Thursday, July 31, 2008, at 10:00 a.m. in room 2322 Rayburn House Office Building. The hearing is entitled “H.R. 6594, James Zadroga 9/11 Health and Compensation Act of 2008.”

The attack on and subsequent collapse of the World Trade Center (WTC) buildings on September 11, 2001, exposed hundreds of thousands of people to environmental hazards such as asbestos, particulate matter, and smoke. As a direct result of the WTC attacks, many responders, residents, area workers, and other community members face a variety of both physical and mental health problems including respiratory ailments, symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder, and increased alcohol and tobacco use. H.R. 6594 would establish a federal program for the monitoring and treatment of eligible responders and community members.

This Subcommittee also held a hearing on September 18, 2007, entitled, “Answering the Call: Medical Monitoring and Treatment of 9/11 Health Effects.” For archived information or updates on this week’s hearing please visit the Committee website at: http://energycommerce.house.gov.
