From Sun Dec 28, 2008 3:00 am to Fri Jan 02, 2009 2:59 am (included)
Thanks to the hard work of all involved we had a very successful year cleaning up graffiti on Staten Island.
We were able to clean up 800 of the 889 sites reported.
The CAU accounted for 376 cleanups while Where to Turn accounted for 319.
The other 105 sites were completed by the Borough President’s Clean Team and other agencies.
Our court ordered community servants logged over 1,000 hours cleaning up locations.
We will continue to do cleanups, weather permitting, throughout the winter.
We ask that everyone continue to submit waivers for any newly tagged locations.
If we do not have waivers we cannot remove the graffiti.
Scott also completed 25 American flag murals since April and will continue till we hit our goal of 50.
We will be seeking sponsors and locations throughout the winter.
We will also be recruiting grammar school students to carry photos of the murals in the 2009 Memorial Day Parade.
We will be holding a press conference after the holidays to thank everyone who participated in our program this year.
We will also holding a Town Hall Meeting on Graffiti in February to plan the 2009 program and get businesses and schools more involved.
Even though we got some paint and supplies from the Mayor’s office we spent over $10,000 on supplies alone this year.
We are hoping to get local businesses, and civic and community groups to join our “Strike Out Graffiti Project” in 2009.
We will ask them to donate a specific dollar amount each time a Staten Island pitcher strikes out an opposing batter.
Last year Staten Island Yankee pitchers struck out 567 batters
If we can get 20 local businesses to donate even $1.00 per strikeout we will be able to cover our costs of supplies.
Any extra raised will go towards murals and awarding schools that become active participants in our cleanups.
Please spread the word and help us “Change the Face of Staten Island” in 2009.
