HISTORIC “LAST COLUMN” TO RETURN TO WORLD TRADE CENTER SITE FOR PERMANENT INSTALLATION IN MUSEUM
On August 24, the historic “Last Column,” the final steel beam to be removed from the World Trade Center site, will return to the site for permanent installation in the 9/11 Memorial Museum. The 36-foot high “Last Column” was covered in tributes from workers, rescue personnel, and family members before the column was removed from the site, marking the end of the recovery efforts in May 2002.
The "Last Column" will be delievered from Hangar 17 at JFK airport to the World Trade Center site on the morning of August 24. The column is expected to proceed down West Street from 42nd street to the World Trade Center site from approximately 4:00am-5:00am. Media wishing to photograph or film Column as it approaches the World Trade Center site is advised to locate along West Street between 4:00am and 5:00am.
After arrival at the WTC site, the “Last Column” will be prepared for transfer, attached to a crane, picked, and lowered for permanent installation in the planned Museum exhibition space. Media is invited to the site at 10:00am to cover its installation.
9/11 Memorial & Museum and Port Authority representatives will be available for interviews before and after the “Last Column” is lowered into the site.
