Statement of Reps. Maloney & Nadler
on Rejection of WTC Settlement

Washington, D.C. -- U.S. Representatives Carolyn Maloney and Jerrold Nadler, authors of the James Zadroga 9/11 Health and Compensation Act, today issued the following statement on U.S. District Judge Alvin Hellersteins rejection of the proposed settlement of thousands of lawsuits filed by workers who participated in rescue and recovery efforts at Ground Zero:

The uncertainty surrounding the settlement demonstrates yet again the urgent need for Congress to pass the Zadroga Act, which would provide guaranteed health care and an estimated $6 billion in compensation for those who lost their health as a result of the 9/11 attacks. We have a moral obligation to help those who were injured or made sick by the attacks on our nation.

The Zadroga Act is gathering momentum in Congress, and received bipartisan support this week in the House Health Subcommittee. We are confident that the full House Energy and Commerce Committee will act on the bill in April, and that, with the support of Speaker Pelosi, we will quickly pass the bill in the House and send it to the Senate.
