9/11 FF families hail Rep. Nadler's call for oversight by National Park Service
at 9/11 Memorial
FF group calls for NPS to run entire Memorial Museum
& calls for repurposing of 9/11 Memorial foundation to
a solely fundraising function

9/11 Parents & Families of Firefighters and WTC Victims applaud Congressman Jerrold Nadler in his call for the National Park Service's role, and most importantly its oversight - at the 9/11 Memorial and Museum. It is important to note that in August, 2002, Representative Nadler, along with then Senator Hillary Clinton, were the first members of Congress to advocate for the National Park Service (NPS) presence at Ground Zero. Finally, their dream of a truly authentic national 9/11 Memorial is coming to fruition. It is unfortunate that so much time and money has been wasted by the private 9/11 Memorial Foundation in creating the world's most expensive memorial and museum ever built - at a staggering $1.3 billion.

A majority of the public, including many 9/11 families, do not realize that at present, a private foundation is running the 9/11 Memorial and uncompleted museum. As our Firefighter Family group has done since February of 2012, we continue to advocate for a complete takeover of the 9/11 Memorial and Museum by the National Park Service. The NPS will bring transparency, professional management, fiscal responsibility and true collaboration with family members - things that have been sorely lacking at Ground Zero for over 10 years. If the 9/11 memorial foundation is to exist in the future, it must be transformed, reconstituted and repurposed. The NPS should operate the entire memorial site and the currently private 9/11 Foundation should be transformed into a " Friends Of the National 9/11 Memorial and Museum" partnership- whose sole purpose is to raise money for the memorial & museum.

"Friends Of " groups, such as the Gettysburg Foundation and the African Burial Ground Monument Foundation conduct external fundraising for their national parks. We need only look at the The Flight 93 National Memorial and its "Friends of Flight 93 National Memorial" for an actual model of collaboration and professionalism. There are over 150 " Friends Of" groups connected to national parks and memorials throughout the USA. All of these national parks and monuments are run by the NPS. The primary role of "friends groups" is support in the form of fundraising - and we don't see why the current 9/11 foundation should not be assigned this very same role. In this way, the NPS can operate the 9/11 Memorial & Museum and the 9/11 memorial foundation can perform the crucial role of raising the needed funds to sustain the memorial and museum. This is what is needed at GZ.

Given the 9/11 Memorial Foundation's dismal track record, we do not advocate for a "private sector" memorial-museum arrangement such as that of the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, which is not a National Park Service facility. From our perspective, the irresponsible fiscal and management practices of the 9/11 Memorial and Museum Foundation should make it ineligible for additional public federal dollars with little or no oversight by an agency of the federal government..

It's time for truth in advertising - we need the operational control and oversight of the National Park Service to make this an authentic National September 11th Memorial and Museum.
