GILLIBRAND, SCHUMER STATEMENT ON ANNOUNCEMENT OF FINAL RULING ADDING 14 CATEGORIES OF CANCERS TO ZADROGA BILL

New York, NY - U.S. Senators Kirsten Gillibrand and Charles. E Schumer released the following statement today as the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health prepares to announce a final rule accepting all of the Science/Technical Advisory Committee’s recommendations adding certain cancers to the list of covered conditions for World Trade Center Health Program. The final rule adopts the advisory committee’s recommendation to add 14 categories of cancers, for a total of 50, including those affecting the respiratory and digestive system, after a review of the science supported a link between the exposure to toxins at Ground Zero and developing cancer. Two more peer-reviewed scientific studies are also expected to be released which will be reviewed to determine whether additional cancers should be added to the list.

“We fought long and hard to make sure that our 9-11 heroes suffering from cancers obtained from their work at Ground Zero get the help they deserve,” said Senators Gillibrand and Schumer. “Today’s announcement is a huge step forward that will provide justice and support to so many who are now suffering from cancer and other illnesses. We will press on – with advocates, the community, and our partners in government – to ensure that all those who suffered harm from 9-11 and its aftermath get the access to the program they so desperately need.”
