|On Saturday January 12th, The Sandy Claus Foundation in conjunction with the Rockaways/Hurricane Sandy News network will be organizing a massive event called the "Walk a Mile in Our Shoes" event. This will be a local action in the Rockaways, with national and local press and media invitations, with allotted time for local politicos, candidates, community advocates, Sandy victims and disaster relief leaders to all speak on the issues of concern that need too be brought to the public's attention. We will walk along a stretch of beach and other inland areas to highlight the need for the community including but not limited to storm recovery (muckouts, repairs), heath care (mold & cold), and environmental resilience (beach replenishment, storm protection, etc.) This is our ONLY AND LAST CHANCE TO BE HEARD before this bill gets passed or not. We need the nation to see why Congress must pass this relief and aid package and we will fight tooth and nail to make it happen. There will be no excuses. You are either going to stand with us in this fight or you are going to be against us. You choose. Are you going to be apart of this movement? Are you going to recruit others with a heart, a soul and a passion for this relief effort to get involved? We need every relief organization, politician, community activist and anyone who cares at all to get involved in this LAST STAND. We need everyone who has a stake in this Sandy Relief Aid bill being passed to summon your self to this cause and get involved, spread the word, organize buses for people to come join us from all areas of Sandy's path. We will need to keep warm, so bundling up and bringing or soliciting hand warmer donations will be key.
Please tell everyone you know, everyone who has a stake in this recovery and the help that our areas so desperately need. This is our only and last chance to be heard. This is the only way we can press Congress to actually do the right thing and pass a clean bill for Sandy relief for NY and NJ. On January 15th, Speaker Boehner has said he will bring up the bill for a vote. But there are forces at work behind the scenes to pressure hard-leaning Republican Congressmembers to vote AGAINST the bill because it has PORK in it. The pork has been removed from the bill. It is ready to be passed to finally, after over 2 months, help these fellow Americans. Do not dare turn your back on us now, in our greatest moment of need.
Hurricane Sandy left an enormous wake of death and devastation. Life is back to normal and it's business as usual for many. Yet Congress hasn't passed the bulk of requested aid months since the storm hit. Across New York City, and especially in the Rockaways, residents remain without power, heat or hot water in the teeth of winter. Do more people need to die before action is taken? Once the budget is passed, our work is not over; only then can the work actually BEGIN. There is so much to be done! So please, join us, and walk a mile in our shoes. We also call on Congress and other State or City leaders to come and walk a mile with us, either now, or at some future day. Come see why we love our community so much, and why are hearts are broken!
• Groups gather at 9 am.
• 1-mile walk starts at 10 am, followed by a press event and sharing of remarks by members of the community.
• Please come prepared for cold weather.
• All participants must be respectful of the neighborhood; be a sober witness, and pass quietly.
• We will make plenty of noise at the rally site at the end of the march!
• March route and location of press event/rally TBD.
• More details to follow. All event plans are subject to change or cancellation at this time, and require approval/permitting and resolution of logistics. But now is the time spread this across the Facebook universe!! Please re-post this everywhere!!!
These will be the only 4 pages used to coordinate this effort, for ease of communication. We will be obtaining the names, numbers and emails of all those who will be attending so that we may coordinate ambassadors to help bring people to this event. This cannot be organized by a few people. This will require an ALL HANDS ON DECK type of commitment from all of you out there who knows we need to get this help and get it now.
