Free Summer Program At the Y
Coping After Stressful Events Program

As we move past the immediate effects of Hurricane Sandy, we begin to face other challenges in our daily lives. Children/Adults who have suffered difficult experiences, or witnessed someone suffer due to Hurricane Sandy may experience a unique type of stress called traumatic stress that they may not have tools to manage.

How do you identify possible traumatic stress in your child?
Traumatic stress may show up in the form of your child:
not wanting to go to school or work
fearing other less severe storms
having bad dreams
having behavior problems
being over-emotional
having difficulties with schoolwork, job and concentration

If you have noticed any of the signs listed above in your child/Adult or simply noticed an unusual change in your child since Storm Sandy, you may be interested in this program being offered in collaboration with the YMCA Counseling Service.

What is this program?
The C.A.S.E. program will be delivered by trained YMCA Counselors using a curriculum called “Support for Students Exposed to Trauma;” a program researched and shown to have a positive impact on the lives of kids. This program is a series of structured approaches aimed at reducing the stress from exposure to this natural disaster. It includes a wide variety of skill-building techniques all geared toward changing bad thoughts and promoting positive behaviors (i.e., improving social skills, increasing pleasant activities, development of positive coping skills, decreasing avoidance of difficult situations or thoughts). All our children have been affected by the storm in some way and all could benefit by attending these classes. All children or adults, regardless of whether or not their home or family was impacted by the storm are welcomed and encouraged to participate.

**This service is free to all participants**
If you would like more information on the summer program C.A.S.E., which will begin on July 10th, please call Cheryl Costa, or Amanda Wexler, program director for Youth and Teen Services.
