American Public University System's First Homeland Security, Emergency Response Colloquia Set for May 2006
Monday September 12, 12:06 pm ET
Call for papers extended to January 2006

ORLANDO, Fla., Sept. 12 /PRNewswire/ -- ASIS International Annual Seminar -- American Public University System has issued a call for papers for its first international gathering of homeland security and emergency response leaders and practitioners. The deadline for papers has been extended to Jan. 15, 2006, due to Hurricane Katrina and its demands on the emergency response community.
American Public University System ( http://www.apus.edu ) is a distance learning institution serving 12,000 students worldwide. The company is exhibiting at the 51st annual ASIS International seminar today through Sept. 15.

The spring 2006 colloquia, "Managing Evacuation: Ripple Effects of Terrorism and Natural Disasters," will be held May 3-4, 2006 at the National Conservation Training Center in Shepherdstown, W.Va., ( http://www.apus.edu/terrorism-evacuation ). The center is about 70 miles northwest of Washington, D.C.

The summit will focus on the logistics, politics and consequences of large-scale evacuations. It will address the many issues facing outlying cities and counties as they prepare to receive evacuees.

"It's critical that homeland security professionals understand how a mass evacuation affects cities hundreds of miles away, weeks and months after an initial incident," says Bob Jaffin, summit organizer and chair of the University System's homeland security and emergency management studies department. The program -- one of the first in the country -- was established in May 2001, months before 9/11.

"Our goal is to help us all be better prepared, mitigate effects and save lives," he adds.

The summit will bring together disaster management, homeland security, criminal justice and emergency management professionals. Paper topics called for include:

-- Roles of local community emergency response teams, non-governmental
organizations and others
-- Evacuation of "at-risk" and incarcerated populations and others
-- Healthcare trauma center preparations and long-term care
-- Transportation network management overload, including loss of
electronic signaling and communications
-- Outbound and inbound logistics
-- Pet and livestock evacuation

Proposals should be one page, and include a title, abstract and contact information. Send to Bob Jaffin at bjaffin@apus.edu , (phone 304-724-3723).
